San Juan de Oriente ( Marinalte ) is a municipality in the department of Masaya in the Republic of Nicaragua . Together with the municipalities of Catarina , Masatepe , Nandasmo , Niquinohomo , Diriá and Diriomo , it forms the Route of the Peoples' Plateau.
Geography
San Juan de Oriente is located in the Meseta de los Pueblos, 41 kilometers from the capital of Managua on the highway to Masaya .

Limits
It is bordered to the north by the municipality of Catarina , to the south by the municipality of Diriá , to the east by Laguna de Apoyo, and to the west by the municipality of Niquinohomo
Hydrography
Its only body of water is the Laguna de Apoyo Natural Reserve that it shares with the municipalities of Catarina , Diriá and Granada and some streams on its slopes.
Topography
The relief is irregular, but not very rugged, made up of a number of sinusoids with small plains where the town sits. Its greatest geographic feature is the slopes of the Laguna de Apoyo Natural Reserve
History The date of foundation after the Spanish colony dates back to 1585, making it one of the oldest municipalities in the department. The Nicoya and Potosme tribes lived here and spoke the Nahuatl language .
