Rivas Department


The department of Rivas (pronounced [ˈriŲas] in Spanish) is a portion of the Republic of Nicaragua. With a population of 183,611 (2021 estimate), it occupies 2,162 km². Rivas is the capital of the department. The Nicarao are the native people of Rivas, which was home to the Kwawkapolkan and Kakawatan Nahua chiefdoms before to colonization.

Rivas is renowned for its beaches and rich soil. There are numerous plantations growing tobacco, sugar cane, plantains, and other crops all over the department. The department shares borders with the Pacific Ocean to the west and Lake Nicaragua to the east. The department's southern region shares a border with Costa Rica. Due to its proximity to nearby beaches, the small fishing community of San Juan del Sur has become a well-liked tourist destination. About 32,000 people live on the enormous volcanic island of Ometepe, which is another popular tourist destination (2005 census). The department is still inhabited by Nawat Nicarao people.

Rivas is known for its beautiful beaches, volcanic landscapes, and vibrant tourism scene, making it a prime destination for sun and surf enthusiasts.
