Nandasmo

Nandasmo is a municipality in the Masaya department of Nicaragua.

During the National Literacy Crusade carried out between the months of March and August 1980 , Nandasmo was the first territory to be declared free of illiteracy .

Geography The municipal term limits to the north with the Laguna de Masaya, to the south with the municipalities of Masatepe and Niquinohomo , to the east with the municipalities of Masaya and Niquinohomo, and to the west with the municipality of Masatepe. The municipal seat is located 58 kilometers from the capital of Managua .

According to its topographic position, it is located almost at the bottom of a ravine with notable unevenness in its plan. The municipality does not have hydrographic or orographic phenomena of great significance. However, it has shores in the Laguna de Masaya, located at the foot of the Masaya Volcano . It also has a water table at a depth of 1,000 feet (304.8 meters) with good potential for consumption and irrigation.

History The population descends from the most important tribes that populated the country, such as the Chorotegas of Nahuatl origin , who originally inhabited this region.

According to historical data, the first settlers who settled in the territory fled from the eruption of the Santiago volcano. This is how Nandasmo arises, which in the Chorotega language means " by the streams ", and in Nahuatl " a sandy place "; however, in order to make the current name official, it had to go through other names such as: Villa de la Paz and Villa de San Pedro . It was declared a municipality in the year 1976.

Demographics

Nandasmo has a current population of 16,031 inhabitants. Of the total population, 50.3% are men and 49.7% are women. Almost 41.6% of the population lives in the urban area.

Nature and climate

The average annual rainfall ranges between 1,200 and 1,400 mm, the temperature varies between 23 to 24 °C, which defines the tropical savannah climate as dry.

Economy

In addition to agriculture, based mainly on coffee , citrus , beans and corn crops , there is an important crafts, with workshops that represent a broad economic sector, working in the branches of wood and furniture, leather, pottery, lathes and tinsmithery.

Culture

Nandasmo celebrates its festivities from January 14 to 22 of each year in honor of " Sweet Name of Jesus ", " Jesus Nazarene of the Good Death", and " Jesus Divine Shepherd ".

During the development of these festivities, liturgical acts such as masses, rosaries, processions and popular expressions such as: carnivals, bullfights, equestrian or traditional parades are carried out. All these manifestations are accompanied by different dishes such as: Casserole dough, corn chicha and nacatamales , which are offered to each of the visitors.

The municipality is characterized by its legends such as: the nagua cart, the cegua, the cadejo, the goblins, which have been narrated and transmitted orally from generation to generation.

Sports

It was founded on September 9, 2009 in the municipality of Nandasmo and is the team that represents the department of Masaya in soccer in Nicaragua.

The club began in the departmental leagues of Nicaragua (fourth division) and began a path of promotion that ended with the title of the Second Division of Nicaragua in the 2015-16 season, for which it played in the First Division of Nicaragua for the first time. in its history in the 2016-17 season.

There is also a local fourth division league that takes place in the sports fields of Pío XII Norte, Pío XII Sur, known as the curve, and Nandasmo, where very representative and characteristic teams from the area participate.
