Matagalpa Department

Central Nicaragua is home to the department of Matagalpa (pronounced [mataˈʣalpa] in Spanish). With a population of 600,057 (2021 est), it occupies 6,804 km². With a population of over 111,000, Matagalpa serves as the capital.

After Jinotega, Río San Juan, the South Atlantic, and the North Atlantic, Matagalpa is the fifth largest region in terms of area and the second largest in terms of people.

Producing coffee, cattle, milk products, vegetables, wood, gold, and flowers, Matagalpa is the most diverse region. Its vast forests, rivers, and topography make it an ideal destination for ecotourism.

The Nahua people live in the Sebaco valley, one of Nicaragua's most productive regions, even though the Cacaopera people make up the majority of the local indigenous population in Matagalpa.
