Jinotega Department
Jinotega is a department of Nicaragua, pronounced [xinoʈteʣa] in Spanish. Jinotega is the chief of the department. It is situated near the Honduran border in the country's north.
With an estimated population of 483,404 in 2021, the Department of Jinotega occupies 9,222 km². It is among the top 15 largest departments in the nation. On October 15, 1891, it was founded. Furthermore, Jinotega is home to a number of indigenous groups, such as the Nahua and Cacaopera.
In the year 2017, the city of Jinotega "Las Brumas" had 53,265 residents, making it the departmental capital of the same department. It is 142 kilometers from Managua (2 hours and 44 minutes by car. Panamericana / Panamericana Nte./CA-1) and is situated in a valley at an elevation of 1,003.87 meters above sea level. It has a cool environment with an average temperature of 25 °C.
The department uses the Lake Apanás Dam, a popular tourist destination, to produce its own electricity. The Isabelia Mountain Range is home to a number of cloud forest peaks and massifs, including Datanlí Diablo (1,550 m) with its "la Bujona" waterfall and Chimborazo (1,688 m). Additionally, the Bosawás Biosphere Reserve, the largest biosphere reserve in Central America with an area of roughly 22,000 km2, and the Penas Blancas Massif (1,700 m) with many water drops.

The man-made Lake Apanas is close to the city of Jinotega. at the late 1920s and early 1930s, General Sandino's headquarters against the US Marines' forcible occupation of Nicaragua was at the village of San Rafael del Norte, which is roughly 20 minutes north of Jinotega City. San Rafael features a tiny museum devoted to Sandino and his wife, Blanca Aráuz, as well as a charming neoclassical parrish church across the lush Main Square.
