The past
Diriomo's name is derived from the Nahuatlaca native language, which means "foreign." Prior to the Spanish conquest, the town was part of the Chorotegas tribe, which also included the nearby communities of Diriá, Nicarao, and Diriangén.
In addition to Nindiri, San Juan de Oriente, San Marcos, Niquinohomo, Masatepe, Catarina, and Diria, Diriomo is also regarded as a member of the White Towns, or Pueblos Blancos. These villages get their name from the whitewash—a mixture of lime, salt, and water—that is applied to their homes and structures. Strong pre-Columbian Nicaraguan customs that predate the arrival of European colonists are recognized to be represented by the White Towns.
