Puerto Cabezas - Bilwi (Capital City)


Puerto Cabezas, also known as Bragman's Bluff (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈpweɾ.to ka.ˈβe.sas]; Miskito: Bilwi) is a municipality and city in Nicaragua. It is the capital of Miskito nation in the North Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region.

The municipality and the entire region are native American lands. The city of Puerto Cabezas borders the Community of Ten Communities.

The past
On September 4, 2007, Hurricane Felix struck Puerto Cabezas, killing over 100 people. On November 3, 2020, Hurricane Eta made landfall in the city, causing significant damage. Hurricane Iota made landfall in the city as a powerful Category 4 storm on November 16, 2020.

Climate Puerto Cabezas experiences substantial rainfall throughout the year, with a brief dry season in March and April. The region is classified as having a tropical monsoon climate (Köppen climate classification Am). Nevertheless, the average rainfall during these months is between 48 and 54 millimeters (1.9 and 2.1 inches). February's average temperature is 24.5 °C (76.1 °F), while May's average is 27.8 °C (82.0 °F). In an average year, there are 198 days with detectable rain and 2,799 millimeters (110 in) of rainfall.

The predominant Miskito culture in Puerto Cabezas is followed by Creole, Mayangna, and Latino cultures.

Puerto Cabezas is home to a campus of the University of the Autonomous Regions of the Nicaraguan Caribbean Coast (URACCAN), which also maintains campuses in the RACCS and RACCN.
